A closer look at the Huawei MateBook D14: Unboxing, specs, and price

A new lightweight laptop is on its way to the Philippines! The Huawei MateBook D14 has officially been launched today (June 25, 2020) and Manila Millennial was lucky enough to get first dibs. Getting first dibs come with great responsibility, of course, so we’re sharing our first impressions and a closer look at the unit in case you’re looking for a 14-inch laptop than has a decent CPU for its price.

UNBOXING

The laptop itself is already light and I like the Mystic Silver color since it’s easy to spot. It’s also slim and it can fit perfectly in tote bags that I use for work. The edges, however, are not as curved as average laptops but it doesn’t bother me since the design complements its screen with barely-there bezels and an 84% screen-to-body ratio. There’s more screen space now since the web cam is already hidden within the keyboard.

Notable features for me include the Fingerprint Power Button – which serves as a power button and fingerprint scanner to easily unlock the device, Huawei Share – which enables users to access their phone and transfer files with just a click and drag, and the recessed camera – which is a plus for people like me who prefer putting stickers or small sticky notes on the web cam for “security purposes”. I’m just not used to the position of the camera since it wouldn’t be great for taking down notes via laptop during online video meetings. My fingers would get in the way of the camera when I type!

The Huawei MateBook D14 (AMD edition) that we’ve received is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 3700U with Radeon RX Vega 10 Graphics Card. There’s another variant with lower specs being sold for a lower price, too. However, it’s also better to get the higher version if you often use editing tools in your laptop.

So far, this laptop looks promising. It would be better if they included a charger that we can use for our usual power outlets here in the Philippines. I had to look for an AC adapter in order to charge it after unboxing.
