#ShopeeBeautyFair: KC Concepcion, Megan Young, influencers join forces to empower women

The year is 2018. Standards and traditional beliefs are being challenged not just by millennials, but people beyond our generation as well. Included in the common causes we see beyond social media today include breaking beauty standards, pushing for body positivity, and celebrating for women as they are.

With this, e-commerce platform Shopee has recently brought together different celebrities, influencers, and beauty brands to join them in celebrating and empowering women both online and offline. Women’s Rights advocates – actress KC Concepcion, 2013 Miss World Megan Young, blogger-influencers Martha Jante, Kristine Roces, and Helen Payawal – shared their personal stories on how they overcame and are continuously trying to overcome society’s beauty standards in order to encourage Filipinas to feel better about themselves. After all, standing under the spotlight makes women more prone to criticisms, but they’re using this power to speak for what really matters – staying loud and proud regardless of a woman’s size, weight, skin tone, or preference.

To help Maybelline in empowering women to #MakeItHappen, top beauty influencers Martha Jante, Kristine Roces of Real Asian Beauty, and Helen Payawal of Helen on Fleek talked about their work as influencers and bloggers in the beauty industry. Like normal people, these influencers also shared their everyday struggles as women from getting insecurities about their appearance to brushing off negative remarks. For them, makeup has been their go-to confidence booster and we can pretty much relate. After all, makeup doesn’t turn anyone “fake”, it just emphasizes our best features.

On the other hand, Palmolive brand ambassador KC Concepcion emphasized how health can bring out the best in women. The singer-turned-actress talked about numerous topics from haircare to fitness, and how her journey with maintaining her health has helped her confidence and has enabled her to achieve success in both her career and personal life. She bravely admitted how she succumbed to stress and took it as a reminder to take care of herself and use her clout to spread the word about healthy living.

Miss World 2013 Megan Young

The session ended with Megan Young giving everyone a glimmer of hope. Her road to the Miss World crown was never easy for her, as she has also experienced the same insecurities and hurtful words that most of us have gone through. It’s hard to imagine a queen like her being bullied in her early years! But life isn’t always easy as it seems.

“Joining Miss World 5 years ago really took me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to be more confident. After being crowned, I realized I was in a position where I had the power to influence young women, and I wanted to do my part to encourage them to stand up for themselves. I used to just shrug off people who say insensitive or hurtful comments, but now call them out and tell them they’re wrong, and I encourage all women to not be afraid to do the same,” shared Megan.

Her success in her acting career is also a reflection of her commitment to empowering women, choosing only to act in powerful female roles. Megan currently stars in the drama, The Step Daughters, where she plays a young, fearless woman named Mayumi who changed her destiny by being tenacious and true to herself.
