All these bad reviews on ‘Suicide Squad’ is only drawing in more hype it deserves

To all the critiques badmouthing the movie: As the Joker says, “Whhhy sooo serious?”

Seriously, what do you expect to see from a movie about villains who just do what they do? This isn’t some flick that’s going to head to the Oscars or some award-giving body for its storyline and dramatic acting. As far as I know, DC tried to stay faithful to the comic books where the storyline really isn’t that heartwarming unlike your typical blockbuster movies. Here’s a picker-upper from all the negativities you’ve seen on the net: GO WATCH THE MOVIE. IT’S WORTH IT.

Call me a “noob” for going against the tide of negative reviews which range from just a “badly-put story” to a “career suicide” for the franchise but word has to go out (It’s what millennials do, right? Speak their mind too much). Suicide Squad isn’t entirely bad but it was, in millennial terms, “meh” — not really good and not really bad. I have seen it with my own eyes and it would have been better if it was tweaked a bit here and there but overall, it was okay and it can live up to your money’s worth. After all, this is the first time that the spotlight’s been on a group of bad guys. DC did what they can to give the viewers enough backstory on the characters within the 123-minute time frame, even though they’re not as specific as the ones you’ll see on the comic books.

Suicide Squad is a movie about villains trying to do some good to the world because they were told to do so. DC actually took a leap of faith and whipped out an interesting bunch from the multitude of characters who have been part of Task Force X. Once you see the movie, you’ll see why they were chosen.

The genre itself is a crazy mix just like its characters – Deadshot (Will Smith) bringing in a bit of comedy, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) dragging in some bad romance, Joker (Jared Leto) adding up to the mad-in-love vibe, Katana (Karen Fukuhara) and Diablo (Jay Hernandez) amping up the action, Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) spooking everyone, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) packing enough adventure for all, and Boomerang (Jai Courtney) adding a dose of pink fluffy unicorn cuteness.

The approach to DC’s cinematic universe was made fast, straight to the point, and jam-packed with all the characters involved. No lengthy pep talks here. You’ll also have reasons to chuckle from time to time. Margot and Cara did very well in their respective roles, Will’s witty banters were okay, while the others maintained their sinister smiles and angsty vibe until the end. I enjoyed watching and it’s quite entertaining that you won’t expect certain characters to pop out from some scenes. Keep your eyes peeled for Ezra Miller! (You know what that means *nudge nudge*)

Reserve further judgments until you see it for yourself but here are 10 things not to expect in case you need a heads up:

1. Much participation from the Joker

There’s a reason why he’s apart from the team as seen in the posters. It might actually disappoint you but you’re about to see a side of the Joker that has not yet been fully explored in the movies.

2. Jared Leto pulling a Heath Ledger

They’re two different people with two different roles to play albeit being the same character. Mind you, Joker’s crazy for a lot of things… including Harley (based on the movie)!

3. A heavily-clad Harley Quinn

This badass gal has been dressing differently across the years and even though her skimpy attire sparked quite a controversy, I’d like to let you know that it could have been more revealing.

4. Characters being all goody-goody

Working for the betterment of the world who hates them doesn’t require them to act all righteous. Expect mischief and mayhem here and there.

5. Totally heartless bunch

They still have a heart, and oh boy, some would even kill just to get their heart back.

6. Everyone surviving in the end

Mild spoiler alert: Someone’s gonna die.

7. An equal share of the spotlight

Deadshot and Harley’s got much of the speaking lines but most of the cool stuff go with the latter. Not much will be said about the likes of Katana, Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Captain Boomerang. Read up after the movie, maybe?

8. Marvel-type of comedy

This one’s far from the likes of Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy.

9. Praiseworthy character development

We have a handful of characters and a limited time. You won’t be attached to anyone’s life story but the brief entertainment they bring is one of a kind.

10. A bad soundtrack

Suicide Squad’s soundtrack is so good! Did you know: Aside from Twenty-one Pilot’s Heathens, Panic! At the Disco recorded a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody for the film. Yup, that’s Brendon Urie’s voice you’re hearing in the trailer.

There you go. It’s still quite good! Up to you to believe me or not; There is still much for me to see and read about these baddies but I’m not a total stranger to the early versions of Suicide Squad. Comments are very much welcome and links to a few more strips I must see about these characters are highly appreciated. Thanks, puddins!
